Copra is an oilseed processed by drying the coconuts scientifically known as ‘Cocos nucifera’. It is one of the most important profitable oil seeds in India as well as in the world.
The word ‘copra’ is supposed to have originated from the Tamizh word ‘kopparai’. And the same has reportedly been processed and is in use for more than 4000 years for the purpose of making oil, especially in the Asian tropical regions.
Copra has two main varieties: the milling and the edible. As their names suggest, milling copra is processed to make oil and the edible copra is consumed as a dry fruit and is also used for religious purposes.
Copra is categorized mainly into three grades based on its qualities such as moisture content, oil content and free fatty acid content.
